Nebraska History |
Known as the Cornhusker State, Nebraska's roots are deep in the history and geography of the United States. The land was purchased by the US government in 1803 through the Louisiana Purchase. The early settlement before statehood was primarily in eastern Nebraska near the Missouri River. Trails, such as a Mormon Trail and Oregon Trail, crossed from east to west as the territory expanded. Nebraska became a state on 1 March 1867. With the completion of the railroads, the trail system dwindled.
